Tomorrow I'll get my head back into fandomy stuff, but for tonight, this might be the most perfect thing EVER. Oh, Johnny Flynn. <3

rillalicious: (Stranger)
* My thoughts are with Norway this morning. My heart goes out to the survivors and the rest of the country.

* Good luck to all the couples lining up at midnight to get their marriage licenses in NY. My city, in particular, is being awesome about accommodating people. Marriage might not be my gig personally, but anyone who wants to make it work should have the right to do it.

* Still have swollen glands up the right side of my throat and head, but other than that annoyance, I'm feeling much better. It's cooler today, and the farmer's market is going to be lovely.

* I think I had maybe forgotten how kind and awesome SS/HG readers are when it comes to reading WIPs. What sweet, thoughtful people. <3 to you guys.

* Fanfic meme for today:

6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

I was going to give this my pad answer of "I prefer writing characters who interest me", but on second thought, I don't know how true that is. I think by and large I write more male characters, but they tend to be very specific characters, with qualities that I relate to (there's also a group of characters I like with qualities that I don't have, but that I admire, but I think that's a whole different discussion). So I think that the qualities that draw me in to a character and make me want to write that character are more often given to male characters in fiction/television/movies (which totally sucks in its own right). There are exceptions to this--Justified, for instance. Give me ANY female character in Justified and I could absolutely obsess over writing her.

Also, there's a whole category of female characters I find really interesting whom I haven't written for one reason or another. Madeline and Fiona from Burn Notice, for example. I think I love every female character in Sons of Anarchy, but I don't know enough about either guns or bikes to write in that fandom. I've totally neglected the female characters in Numb3rs fandom even though I love them all, mainly because the David/Colby dynamic just speaks louder in my head. (Have I never mentioned how badly I wanted to write Millie/Alan?)

I don't know. I carry a lot of guilt over how much easier it seems to be for me to write male characters.

The rest of the questions )

* And it's been a while since I've extolled the virtues of Johnny Flynn. No words for how I feel about this man and his incredible talent. Just none. Here, friends, have some music this morning:

rillalicious: (Sally)
Today was just gorgeous. Fresh air and sunshine and happy things all around. I have things to share!

* Dinner. OMG, yum. Spent most of the day walking around the biggest park in the city, and may have stopped off to get a ridiculously sugary coffee drink that kind of made me feel gross afterward. So, I came home and made a brown rice and veggie stir fry for dinner with a really really yummy beet slaw. Recipe behind the cut.

BEEEEEEEEEEETS )

* I'm not generally very big on fashion blogs, but I found Tomboy Style the other day and OH, I'm in love.

* For funny. Amy Sedaris (<3) on how to cook hotdogs over the fire on a rake )

* GOOD NEWS! Boy Meets World Season 5 is finally available on dvd. I have been waiting ages and ages for this. And Season 6 is due out in July. Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeny!

* My current song obsession is I Will Never Love You More by Soko, and this little film that goes with it makes me all sorts of happy:

* How are you all, flist? What are you doing this weekend?
rillalicious: (Eric Bana)
* THE SUN CAME OUT TODAY. YOU GUYS. THE SUN.

It was nice. So we walked.

* Also, I ate mostly green things. So I feel good. And a cookie. Which made me happy. And now I have wine. Which makes me very happy.

* Still catching up on the middle of the season of H5-0. Grace Park, why are you so pretty? And when will I stop calling you Boomer? I don't even know.

* I had to return Treme to the library before I finished the first season. *sigh* I just don't have that many hours in one week to watch TV. But hopefully they'll have it again when I go back so I can get it out. Our library is pretty awesome, so I'm hoping so.

* Speaking of our awesome library, their budget failed by a couple hundred votes last week. HOW DO WE LIVE IN A WORLD THAT WON'T PASS LIBRARY BUDGETS? Seriously, it makes me weep. (First world problems much?)

* Finishing up this SS/HG ficlet as we speak. I kind of like it, actually. It's dark and moody, sort of like the SS/HG phase I went through 3 or 4 years ago. I miss them, sometimes, my Snape and Hermione. <3

* The goal for this weekend is to write my [livejournal.com profile] nextgendarkfest fic. I know exactly what I want to write, it's just putting it down on paper that is getting in the way. Maybe the SS/HG piece will put me in the right dark mood.

* Let me leave you with music tonight, flist. Eldest hellmonkey homeschooled Greek studies this year, so this is sort of relevant:

rillalicious: (Steve and Danny bench)
Hello, flist.

* Oh, Nutella, I love you so much. I want to marry you like PeeWee Herman married fruit salad.

* I've not been doing very well with the healthy eating thing lately. (See above comment.) This weather, 7 straight days of overcast skies and impending rain, is not conducive to motivation, and it makes it hard to plan a walk down to the health food co-op. It's 1.5 miles each way, so we need a clearly rain-free couple of hours to make the trip. (I could do it faster myself, but alas, I have four sets of smaller feet to bring along.) I need more green things. I think I'll make something spinach-themed tonight. At least I have that on hand.

* I'm also having one of those days where I've decided that everything I've written, am writing, and will write in the future is absolute and utter crap and I should just delete, delete, delete. (ETA: I'm not actually going to delete anything, and I hope that it didn't look like I was begging people to tell me I'm wonderful so I didn't start deleting things. It was just one of those days when everything I typed looked like shit to me. It's better now, though. I swear.)

* I put together a soundtrack for my [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_novella and wow, that was kind of hard to do. I have sort of a tempestuous relationship with country music, but I had to add at least some country, because, hello, Colby, right? But I'm happy with what I came up with in the end. I'm listening to it repeatedly to inspire myself for rewrites.

* I'm transplanting some thyme into a little pot in my kitchen today, and some lavender to a pot on the balcony. Wish me luck, because I have an utter black thumb when it comes to growing things, or even just keeping things alive. Thank god I'm better with children.

* Music that seems to be fitting with today's mood:

* How are YOU, flist?

rillalicious: (Aidan/Rebecca comfort)
* Reading: "Revenge of the Radioactive Lady" by Elizabeth Stuckey-French. Pretty fun so far. And it's a fairly fast read.

* Handwork: Starting a knitting project today. I hope. I suppose that depends on whether or not the toddler is going to let me do it.

* Writing: Last night I got a good bit done on my White Collar fic, my [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_novella, and my [livejournal.com profile] teddy_fest fic. One of those is turning out to be a bit after school special-ish. But I'm feeling all sorts of productive nonetheless. Also? My [livejournal.com profile] crowley_bigbang, which is a crossover I haven't talked about too much, has decided to go all Draco/Hermione on me

* Watching: Finally started catching up on Hawaii Five-O. So far, everything you guys have told me about it has proven true. I'm putting my disbelief on hold due to the incredible amount of chemistry going on with the cast. Definitely not hard on the eyes. Also watching a TON of Doctor Who with the kids. They want to catch up on all of Eleven's episodes, and we've been watching a bit of Four on Netflix as well. (Brought on by a "Back in my day..." moment.)

* Cooking: I dunno yet. It might be a pizza night.

* Listening: Because I'm all thematic today, some music to share:

Dar Williams and Ani DiFranco covering Comfortably Numb:

* Hope you're all having a much sunnier Monday than we are here. Third straight day of rain. Blergh.

rillalicious: (Default)
My mood music for writing tonight.

[livejournal.com profile] zagzagael had asked: Tell me, flist, who/what is that trait that melts you in a sexually compelled manner?

My answer: This. This, this, this, this.

rillalicious: (Shawn and Gus)
You guys, you guys, you guys.

* I'm having one of those days where I'm restlessly bored even though I have a TON of things to do and I'm not getting any of them done.

* Writing, writing, writing. My [livejournal.com profile] crowley_bigbang is heading into the final stretch. At least I hope it is. It's an HP crossover and, um, guys? I think that angle of it might have some Draco/Hermione going on. I know. I'm just as surprised as you are.

* I started my [livejournal.com profile] numb3rs_novella and I'm very excited about that. I've been rewatching some episodes to get a feel for Colby and David banter again and oh, boys. I miss you boys. Really, truly I do. (The story itself is het. So again, wow, writing things I didn't expect.)

* Also co-writing something with [livejournal.com profile] ellensmithee that I'm totally excited about. I hope it's going to be as fun to read as it is to write.

* I need to work on my [livejournal.com profile] spn_cinema fic, but I'm thinking that I will block out a weekend just for that and write it start to finish. I don't expect it to be that long. And the film I picked is Garage Days, which, like, no one has seen, so it's not like I'm writing for a big audience or anything.

* Also? I may have started a White Collar fic.

* So yes, writing like crazy lately. Which is good. And reading. Started the second Sookie Stackhouse book, and Elmore Leonard's "Djibouti".

* And listening to the Decemberists' latest.

How are YOU, flist?
rillalicious: (winter)
* Really, there is. It is absurdly cold.

* Feeling rather detached from fandom lately. Maybe it's this head cold that's filled my brainspace with cotton for the past few days.

* New White Collar tomorrow night. I'm starting to fear that this show is at risk for thinking it's more clever than it is. The cast is fantastic, with great chemistry, but I'm not sure the writing holds up to the show's opinion of itself. I have many more thoughts about it, but I know this is a wildly unpopular opinion, so I'll keep them to myself unless asked. I'm certainly not going to stop watching (Matt Bomer is far too pretty for that), but I think I'll adjust my expectations a bit. I need to stop expecting Sports Night or Bayliss/Pembleton banter on shows like this.

* On the other hand, we're very much enjoying Being Human US. I hadn't planned on watching, but checked it out in a moment of curiosity and I love it a lot so far.

* I'm listening to the new Iron & Wine album right now and literally have goosebumps. (Not from the cold, either.)

* Reading "Crazy Sexy Diet" in preparation to clean up my act a bit and start eating vegetarian again. I'm willing to bet that 99% of my health problems are diet related (hello hypoglycemia, migraines, etc). It's full of solid advice, but I find all of the life-coach-esque bullshit to be really grating. Then again, I guess that if I'd single-handedly wrestled cancer under control, I'd probably be pretty peppy about it too.

* Also decided to buckle down and commit to reading the rest of Dead Until Dark instead of just letting it lay to waste on the end table. I haven't decided what I think of Harris overall, but I enjoy her humor. I do wish I didn't hear tv!Bill in my head saying "Suckeh!" every time he addresses Sookie, though. Also, I keep drifting off a bit every time Sam or Eric is mentioned due to the hotness of their tv counterparts.

* I've been writing almost exclusively for exchange fics lately, and I'm feeling ready to tackle something else. I just have to decide what that will be. Hmmmm.

* All right, I should tie this up here. I have tea and a stack of books competing with a nice warm bed for my attention. Off to see who will win. <3 flist.

Happy Day

I hope everyone's holidays were wonderful and filled with really good things.

Oooh, I got lovely things. T-shirts that I can wear (I have many many t-shirts that I can no longer wear now that the hellmonkeys can read) and Red Riding Hood which I've been longing for and a food processor and cute little XKCD buttons. My very favorite gift, though? A bumper sticker that reads "Opinions!" Bwah! Of course, right now the only place I have to stick it is the invisible jet, but at some point I'm sure I'll have a vehicle again.

Today I'm going to drink tea and eat cookies and stay in bed. And maybe walk down to Starbucks later since I've been out of coffee for 4 days now.

I sort of went out of order on the music meme

24 - a song that you want to play at your funeral
I've got two for this one, and it's the same two artists on each song. [livejournal.com profile] thistle_verse, I can hear your surprise from here (or not). Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling, The Water & Travel Light. The Water is just a gorgeous song, and Travel Light is sweet and folky.

The Water and Travel Light )

26 - a song that makes you laugh - Weird Al Yankovich, Amish Paradise

There was a point where I realized that everything my kids knew about the Amish, they learned from Weird Al. (We have since remedied that.)

Happy Christmas Eve. This is the first year it will be just the kids and me. (The boyfriend is, alas, traveling tonight.)

25 - a song that you love at Christmas

My favorite carol of all, and a gorgeous version of it: The Holly and the Ivy, Mediaeval Baebes

Also, I'd be remiss without my yearly post of this one: The Christians and the Pagans, Dar Williams

23 - a song that you want to play at your wedding

Ahahahahaha. Yes. No more weddings for Rilla. However, I chose a song that I'd much rather listen to than have another wedding. Far Away, Ingrid Michaelson. <3

Now it's back to baking cookies.

22 - a song that you listen to when you're sad

River, by Joni Mitchell. Of course. I mean, come on. (Pretty much anything by Joni fills this requirement.)

rillalicious: (winter)
* I can't believe how fast December has flown by. I feel like I've been underwater for the whole month.

* I'm feeling the need to write something different than the three fest fics I'm working on at the moment. Break it up a little bit. I've got something ficlet-length rolling around in my head. It's kind of holiday themed, but it's for a fandom that's only relevant to like, two of you on my flist.([livejournal.com profile] thenotoriousso4 and [livejournal.com profile] grrarrg0908, can you guys guess? *g*)

* I ordered pizza last night. And it had pineapple on it. Which immediately made me think of [livejournal.com profile] mustangcandi.

* Also, I finally caught Hawaii 5-0 last night. OMG. There were many things to love about it. I'm definitely intrigued and going to watch more. I don't know what it is with me lately. It used to be that the only crime shows I'd ever been into were Barney Miller and Homocide (and for a while, SVU, since I couldn't help following Munch). Incidentally, my dad was once an extra on the original Hawaii 5-0. He was an MP in Hawaii in the early 70s. /random

21 - a song that you listen to when you're happy

I've got a whole bunch and narrowed it down to three, so they're behind the cut. Leftovers by Johnny Flynn (I listen to a LOT of Johnny when I'm happy, or sad, or anything else really, so it was hard to pick one) Inches and Falling by the Format and Veronica by Elvis Costello. The Leftovers video is all sorts of fantastic.

20 - a song that you listen to when you're angry - White Stripes, You Don't Know What Love Is

This one was easy. When I'm angry, I put this on, LOUDLY, and sing and clean something. And then everything is better. The White Stripes are also on my list of 5 favorite bands ever.

19 - a song from your favorite album - Gin Blossoms' New Miserable Experiences, Hey Jealousy

I'm cheating on this one. NME was my favorite album at one point in high school. I still know every single word. And since I've picked songs from my current favorite albums for other days, I'm going with this one, which is still near the top of the list. This song reminds me of just driving when I was a teenager (usually after kidnapping the boyfriend--who was, at the time, "the best friend"--and saying, "You don't need to be anywhere for the next four or so hours, do you?") and having nowhere in particular to go. This album was my driving music. This song especially.

In other news, last week I was watching General Hospital as I've tended to do every now and then for the past 30 years, give or take, and had a very amusing exchange with the boyfriend (who also watches GH on occasion). It involves the image that accompanied the conversation, so I'm putting it behind a cut:

And they're pretty to look at even if you don't watch GH )

Also? I am wide awake at 2 am. Does not bode well for tomorrow.

* Today is sunny and snowy and all around a lovely December day.

* Almost out of cookies already. Must bake more.

* I am determined to get a lot of writing done today.

18 - a song that you wish you heard on the radio - Laura Marling, Rambling Man

Really, anything and everything by Laura should be on the radio, but this is my favorite. The video is all sorts of gorgeous, too.

rillalicious: (Cary Grant)
* This staying up all night with the baby/toddler thing? Yeah, it's wearing a little thin after 11 years.

* It's very chilly in here right now. I don't think this apartment has very good windows.

* I'd like to do more writing, but at the moment there are so many wonderful things to read on my flist with all the December fests going on that it's definitely cutting into my productivity time. I'll have more recs soon. Especially from Kinky Kristmas over at Daily Deviant on IJ. I don't have a personal IJ anymore, but I'm thinking of getting another just so I can comment on some of the great stuff I've been reading there. I also have some [livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus recs to share.

17 - a song that you hear often on the radio - Hey Marseilles, To Travels & Trunks

Okay, so I'm using the term "often" loosely. I don't listen to commercial radio. I catch NPR when I can, and otherwise, I listen to WBER online sometimes. So there's not a whole lot I hear on the radio regularly. But from the first time I heard this, I became kind of obsessed with the band, and now I've been listening to them a lot.

I have a very bad, visceral reaction to this song now, but when it first came out, it reminded me of spending the weekend visiting the college that I ultimately chose.

rillalicious: (Johnny Flynn)
15 - a song that describes you - The Wrote and the Writ, Johnny Flynn (who is seriously the most beautiful human being on the planet). I don't have words for how much I love this song and the lovely man who sings it.
