norgbelulah gave me B. I am sure she will by shocked by my first choice.
1. Boyd Crowder (Justified). Oh, Boyd. If you had told me a year ago that my very favorite character on television would be one who was introduced as a white supremacist who blew things up and killed people, I would have thought that sounded crazy. But what the writers (and the actor) on this show have done with Boyd Crowder is just incredible. I know I've said it a thousand times, but I honestly think he's the most compelling character on television. I love that Boyd has gone through hell to find redemption, and that it didn't change him so completely that he lost what made him Boyd in the first place. He's so, so, so smart, his vocabulary is, like, the best thing EVER, and just the way he delivers each line gives me chills. I can't wait for each new episode because I'm dying to see what he's going to do. And also, I big fuzzy heart his relationship with Ava.
2. Bobby Singer (Supernatural). Hee, I adore Bobby. I love his grumpiness, his wit, and his ability to get shit done in a crisis. I love his relationship with the Winchester boys. I'll admit that deep in my heart, there is a total Bobby/Crowley shipper. Bobby is my happy place on Supernatural, and every time he's in an episode, it's just that much better. (Do I even need to get started on how excited I was over Jim Beaver's guest appearance on Justified? No I do not.)
3. Betty Draper (Mad Men). Oh, this is where I hang my head in shame because Betty is the only woman on my list. I'm sure as soon as I hit post, I'll think of dozens of other female characters who begin with B, but for now, Betty's it. To me, Betty feels like she walked right out of a Fitzgerald novel and I love that. There's an isolation about her, and a sense that she is so deeply misunderstood by the people who really ought to get her the most. My heart aches for Betty, and I love her for being brave enough to do what she does in the year that she's doing it.
4. Barbossa (Pirates of the Caribbean). After James Norrington, Barbossa is my absolute favorite PotC character (sorry, Jack). If you don't know this about me, I have a total thing for the bad-guy-turned-ambiguous-guy-helping-the-good-guys-out-of-self-interest. I adore the way Geoffrey Rush plays Barbossa and seeing him show up again at the end of the second film made me squee out loud. I can't wait for the fourth film this summer and Barbossa is one of the biggest reasons for that.
5. The Black Prince (Inkspell/Inkdeath). From Cornelia Funke's Inkheart trilogy. The Black Prince was named by Fenoglio (the fictional author of Inkheart) after a famous medieval prince. In my head, he's played by Alimi Ballard (is it any wonder he's one of my favorite characters in the books?), especially after he cuts his hair. He's Dustfinger's best friend, and has a dancing bear who goes everywhere with him. The Prince is the leader of the Strolling Players, the group of motley folk who travel the countryside entertaining. He's one of those characters who is charismatic and wise and just lights up every scene he's in. I have so much more to say, but I know a few of my flisters are planning to read the books and I don't want to spoil. Seriously, guys, why haven't more of you read these books so we can discuss them???? /hysteria.
