"Hey, David, I've only got a second."
"Hey, Colby. How did it go?"
"Uh, great. I'm at her place now."
"And you're calling me. Megan's right. We need an intervention."
"I was just calling to let you know I'm turning my phone off for a while."
"Oh. Huh. So my advice worked out that well for you?"
"Well, I added a few modifications of my own."
"Such as?"
"Falling asleep on the hood of my car in front of her apartment."
"A little creepy, but I'll buy it. You are pretty cute when you're sleeping."
"I thought you hate it when I snore."
"I do, but you don't snore every time you sleep. Just when you're in the right position."
"Good to know."
"I'm just full of interesting little tidbits about Colby Granger."
"Wow, you made that sound dirty."
"Wishful thinking on your part, Colby."
"Uh huh. My part. So, I'm turning off the phone for twenty-four hours."
"Sounds good, man. You enjoy your little honeymoon there, all right?"
"Not a honeymoon yet, but yeah, I will. Tell Rita I said to keep you in line out there."
"I'll tell her you finally got over your jealousy and said hello."
"Close enough. Later, David."
"See ya."

"God." Colby lay on his back in Caroline's bed, running a hand through his hair as he looked up at her, the glint of her golden hair catching the sunlight as it spilled over her shoulders.
He felt as though the only thing he'd done lately was spend time inside his own head, something he really hadn't wanted to do again after he'd finally gotten out from beneath his triple agent cover. But it was worth it. He'd come to a few decisions, and as hard as they were, as much as they'd change his life, if he was going to be with Caroline, they were necessary.
Caroline smiled and climbed off him, stretching out beside him in the bed. "I should probably let you get some rest on your twenty-four hour leave from work."
Colby rolled toward her, sliding his arm around her waist to hold her closely against him. "Rest isn't a priority right now."
"Oh yeah? What is?"
"All the things I still haven't done to you," he said, dragging the back of his knuckles down her throat, watching the rise of her breasts as she inhaled sharply.
"I can see how that would take priority," she said.
"Can you?" he flattened his hand on her stomach, sliding it down slowly, easing the pace even further as she shivered.
"Mmm." She closed her eyes, raising her hips from the bed, urging his hand closer.
"God, I love touching you." He traced the shell of her ear with his tongue as his fingers slid into the warm wetness between her legs.
Caroline's nails were digging into his back then, and he rolled up onto his elbow, making it easier for her to touch him as she scored deep ridges down his back. He slid his fingers inside her, one at first, then two, and she rocked up into him, her teeth digging into her lower lip so hard that a crimson bead of blood rose to the surface. With a breathy exhalation, he leaned forward to sweep it away with the tip of his tongue.
She shuddered, letting out a cry that went straight through him. Colby buried his face in the curve of her neck, inhaling her, pressing his open mouth against her skin as she slowly came down.
"I don't think I'm ever gonna get sick of that," he said. He pressed a kiss to the soft spot just below her ear and pulled away to look at her. Her hair was thrown across the ivory pillowcase like strands of gold, catching the light of the late afternoon sun.
"Me neither." Caroline turned in his arms, propping her head up on her hand. "I don't know what it's going to mean for us. But there's something I need to... Colby, I can't stay here," she said. "In the city. I tried, but--"
"It's okay," he said. "I know." He brushed his thumb over her lips. "I'm leaving the FBI. Wherever you go, Care, I wanna go with you. If... you're ready for that."
"I don't even know where I want to go," she said. "How can I ask you to follow me?"
"I've been all over the place," Colby said. "I've gone where my family expected me to go, where the army expected me to go, where the FBI expected me to go. Just this once, I want to decide where I'm going. And I've decided it's going to be wherever you are."
She laughed and shook her head. "So your big decision is that you're letting me make the big decision."
"Well, when you put it like that..."
"We can make the decision together," she said.
"I guess we can, huh?"
"You're sure you want to leave? I mean, you chose to stay in L.A. before."
"Yeah," he said, "but that was different. David was still here. Everyone was still here, really. Now the team's split up, David's in D.C., and honestly? The only person I really need to be near is you."
She watched him, quiet for a moment, then nodded. "You realize it's been a long time since I've done this."
"Hey, I've been single longer than you have. My last girlfriend was before I left for Afghanistan."
"So you're telling me you might be really bad at this?" she said, smiling genuinely now.
"Maybe, but I learn fast."
"Good to know," she said, and she slipped out of his arms. "I'm going to make a cup of tea. Do you need anything?" He watched her hair spill across her back as she sat up, watched the shadowed outline of her profile as she pulled on her robe.
"Water would be good," he said.
She left the room and Colby sat up. His badge was on the nightstand, and he looked at it, snorting to himself as he considered how sentimentally cliche it would be to pick it up right now. The abstract thought of leaving the FBI had first passed through his mind when she told him how she felt about his job, but he hadn't seriously considered it until blurting it out just now. Every word he'd spoken had been true, but living up to it would be another matter.
Nearly four years had passed since he had asked to stay in L.A., to stay on Don's team; maybe it was time to find something new.
He edged over to the side of the bed and reached down on the floor for his shirt, raising it over his head.
"Oh, don't put that back on." Caroline stood in the doorway, her tea in one hand and a glass of ice water in the other. "I like you without it."
Colby glanced up at the shirt, then dropped it behind him. He thought about all those weeks of wanting her, the months, hell, years before that of slow-building trust and attraction, and he reckoned the badge should matter to him a little more than it did at the moment, but he didn't care. She set the tea down on the night table, moved to hand him the water, but he waved her away, and when she put it down, he took her wrist instead.
"C'mere," he said, pulling her up onto his lap, grinning as the robe slid off her shoulders. "I want to work up a thirst again first."
"I'm more than happy to help you with that."
"And then," he kissed his way up her shoulder, nipping lightly at the base of her throat, "I'll make you breakfast."
"You know it's almost dinner, right?"
"We haven't gotten out of bed yet. Breakfast."
She laughed, raked her nails down the back of his neck. "You know what I like before breakfast?"
"What's that?"
"Shower sex."
"Oh, fuck, yeah," he said, wrapping her legs around his waist and then standing. "You know what I like after breakfast?"
"What?" She tugged at his earlobe with her teeth.
"Kitchen sex."
"Mmm, sounds good," she said. "I guess we have a lot to fit into this twenty-four hours, don't we?"
"When I figure out what my next job's going to be, I'll make sure there are allowances."
"You'd better," she said. "Because one of the joys of being self-employed is that I get to have you any time I want."
"I've got no quarrel with that." He reached around her to turn on the water in the shower, then stepped in, pressing her up against the tile.
"I didn't think you would," she said. She rested the back of her head against the wall behind her, water splashing on her lashes and cheeks. Somehow it made her even more beautiful. "Now less talk, okay? More... other sounds." She tightened the grip of her thighs around him.
Colby growled from low in his chest, pushing the hair back from her face.
"Sweetheart, you can have anything you want."
