Navel-gazing meme
Jul. 18th, 2011 11:35 amSo I've seen this meme all over the place, and I told
zagzagael that I was game if she was. So here it goes.
1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
The first fanfic that I wrote was technically 21 Jump Street. 1987-ish, I think. I had no idea there was such a thing as fanfic or fandom. (I was 11.) I'd write stories out on index cards, and then make all my neighborhood friends act them out with me. I think there's a decent portion of my flist who wasn't even born at that point. Hee.
Anyway, I was working in a bookstore when Goblet of Fire came out (the book, not the movie), and I was pregnant with eldest hellmonkey and I read all the HP books so I knew what to tell people when they had questions and loved them. Sometime between GoF and OotP (maybe 2002?), I was looking up more information online and stumbled across the sweetest Harry/Hermione h/c fic and I read a whole bunch of trio-centric fics, then sort of forgot about it. A friend of mine from other activities wrote Buffy slash, and even though I was never a Buffy fan, I read her stuff and adored it.
Then OotP came out, and I remembered fanfiction and went looking for it, and found McAmy's site. I got totally hooked on SS/HG. That summer was wickedly hot and I was pregnant with Newbaby v.3.0, so I spent the whole summer down in the basement with my computer, reading and writing (terrible!) fanfiction. By the fall, I had this amazing little group of friends and it really, truly felt like a community. Over the next few years my interests spread out quite a bit and I got to meet wonderful people from many corners of HP fandom.
Took a break for personal reasons in 2007 but kept in touch with many of those friends. Then I discovered Numb3rs in early summer 2010 (I know, right after it was cancelled. *sob*) and just couldn't keep myself from seeking out the fandom. It reminded me of everything I loved about fandom, and even though some of that original group had moved on due to RL or other interests, there were still a lot of people around, and I've been slowly making my way back in ever since.
I think I love the community of fandom, and the give and take that comes with reading and writing and sharing fic, and that's what draws me back in every time. I'm a pleaser by nature, and I think fanfic provides a healthy outlet for that--writing to please someone else. That's what I love most about fic exchanges. And there's also the outlet there to write things that please only me. What's not to love, really?
( The rest of the 30 questions )
And stay tuned for a panicked call for hand-holding and beta reading later today. <3, flist.

Stuff and Things
Jul. 17th, 2011 09:53 amI'm collecting my thoughts on DH for a more articulate review post soon, but in the meantime, a couple of things.
* My proudest geekmom moment happened while sitting in the theatre waiting for the movie to start. Nine year-old hellmonkey pulled out his copy of The Hobbit and started reading it aloud to his grandfather. Because dwarf songs make the time pass faster!
* We're traveling again today, and seeing
thistle_verse later!!!! But for now, I'd like to just sit here and write fic with all these ideas in my head. But I can't. Because there is no time! *sadface* (I know! What problems I have, right?)
* So, am I directing any of these DH pt 2 plot bunnies toward anything productive, like the stuff I need to be working on right now?
No, I am not.
I'm writing fic about Charlie and the escaped Gringotts dragon. (I don't think that needs a spoiler cut since it's not an actual scene from the movie, and it's book canon.) My brain started this after reading book 7, but I managed to make it go dormant for a few years. And apparently it's back now.
Honestly, I just completely lack the ability to not write about Charlie or Lee Jordan when I get struck with the inspiration. Teddy Lupin is quickly joining that list.
So, flist, what about you? Are there any characters/ideas that you're never able to shake once they hit you?
* Also? I need more/better HP icons. I've been thinking that for a long while, but now, I want them.

Deathly Hallows Pt 2; My thoughts, pt 1
Jul. 16th, 2011 04:13 pmJust got back from the movie.
I want to see it again and again and again. And read the books again and again and again too.
( Spoilers, in a non-linear fashion )
* I'm sure I'll have more thoughts later, when my brain settles in and processes more.
* In the meantime, flist, I'm counting on you guys to keep me from signing up from every HP fest, ficathon, comment fic meme, etc, that I come across. Because right now I want to WRITE ALL THE FIC OMG.

Fic! Justified
Jul. 14th, 2011 09:56 am* Thank you guys for the chocolate userheads! YUM! Those are so cute.
* On our way out the door to do a bit of traveling (I'll be scarce online this weekend). But first I wanted to post something I wrote for the Summer in Harlan comment fic meme the other day.
Fandom: Justified
Character: Tim Gutterson
Word Count: ~450
Rating: R
Summary: For the prompt: Tim & his rifle (not necessarily euphemism, per se)
A/N: Very slight crossover with Numb3rs (come on, how could you not think it?). Spoilers through S2.

* Hey there, LJ. Why so dead on Tuesdays? It's like the internets don't realize that I'm bored with work today and need entertainment.
* Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world with no interest in tumblr. Or google +. I had a fleeting interest in Twitter, but that's pretty much evaporated now. *clings to LJ like the old lady I am*
* Speaking of aging, my birthday is next week. I have informed the hellmonkeys that they only have seven shopping days left. I'm not so sure the laughter I got in response is promising.
* Got our tickets to see DH pt 2 on Saturday. It's kind of going to kill me to have to wait out Friday, but my brother wants to go with us and has Saturday off. So. Remind me to pack tissues.
* I know you were all waiting with bated breath for the resolution to my art-on-the-walls dilemma, and I've finally come up with something. The blank wall in the living room is getting a cluster of fox themed artwork, and a few framed quotes (Vonnegut's "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" is the first one I've ordered). I decided that too much wolf art was too... reminiscent of Three Wolf Moon, which, while AWESOME for a t-shirt, isn't really the vibe I'm going for in home decorating. The kitchen is getting some mid-century modern posters and photograph prints. The hallway is getting a lovely framed Buddha print. Now I just need to worry about the blank wall in the dining room. At the moment I'm thinking vinyl wall decal, maybe a branch of blossoms and birds, but I'm not married to that idea.
* Writing a bit. Getting my SS/HG groove back on. Working on my
pphpficexchange (Harry/Pansy exchange) and totally excited about it. Also, writing some smutty smut.
* Here, have a quick, lovely Hawaii Five-O rec: Known by
sheafrotherdon. Steve/Danny. ~750 words. R rated. Spoilers through the end of S1. This fic is so beautiful and dreamy and perfect. OMG. It makes my heart happy.
* Okay, time to get cleaned up and find a place with air conditioning to kill a few hours.
* <3 flist.

Here, there and everywhere
Jul. 10th, 2011 11:41 pm* Um, if anybody finds my motivation, could you please let it know that I'm waiting for it to come home? Of course, this could be due to the ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh headache that's settled in behind my left eye.
* In more upbeat news, I finished my
crowley_bigbang! It's about 22k, an SPN/HP crossover, with a side of Draco/Hermione (I know, wut?). And a bit of Bobby/Crowley. Because, really. Anyway, very excited and relieved.
* I've got one more thing to finish in the next few days, and then I'm writing the next chapter of The Librarian's Debt. Yay!
* Oh, oh, oh, and in case there was any question that I am a perpetual twelve year-old. I'm reccing again at the
crack_broom this month. And I'm reccing Albus Severus/Scorpius. Also, my birthday is this month. And I've been absolutely gleeful that I get to rec AS/S for my birthday! Really, honestly, there is some great stuff on that ship, and if you guys are so inclined, please go check it out!
* Hey, silly luddite question here. How do you make a link to, say, a journal or comm on IJ (or DW), and make it look just like a link to an LJ comm, except with the little IJ symbol? I've seen people do it, but I've never learned how.
* Why, yes, I did cry through the entire bit with Jo and the trio giving their speeches at the premiere last week. I am going to be a mess during this movie, man. I have a feeling eldest is going to get up and find another seat so she doesn't have to be seen with the crying lady.
* Still need to catch up on last week's Burn Notice and Suits. Oh, and Torchwood Miracle Day. Summertime is just not conducive to watching TV for me.
* So, how are you, flist? It feels like ages since we've talked.
* OK, now I'm going to crawl into my bed in my very dark bedroom and not get up until tomorrow. <3

Fic! White Collar
Jul. 5th, 2011 12:05 amSo, apparently the thing with me and White Collar fic is that I can't do it in under 9k. I wrote for the
wcpairings exchange, and was lucky to get an absolutely brilliant prompt from
daria234. This was so much fun to write, and
norgbelulah and
ellensmithee were lovely enough to hold my hand while I wibbled over it and beta read and then hold my hand some more. So, anyway, this was posted at the exchange comm last month, and the reveals are up now, so I can post here! Yay!

Things I've Written Lately
Jul. 2nd, 2011 05:06 pmSo, I've written a couple of things lately, and I thought I'd share. (And
scatteredlogic, I know I still owe you birthday fic. As soon as I finish up this big bang I'm working on, I'm going to get my head back into SS/HG and write it!)
So, the first one is for
norgbelulah's awesome Summer in Harlan Commentfic Meme
Fandom: Justified
Prompt:
oz_missage's prompt: Dickie, Mothers and Sons
Characters: Dickie Bennett, Mags Bennett, Coover Bennett, Doyle Bennett, Raylan Givens, Aunt Helen, Raylan's mama
Word Count: ~600
Rating: PG13 for language
Summary: The differences between Raylan's family and Dickie's had never been more obvious than the day Dickie got his limp. (Spoilers for S2)
( When Raylan Givens nearly turns his knee inside out with a baseball bat, Raylan's mama is the first thing that Dickie sees. )
And for the Let's Get Gay Married Commentfic Meme
Fandom: Numb3rs
Prompt:
klutzy_girl's prompt: Colby's visiting David in Washington, D.C., when they decide to drive up to New York. They end up eloping.
Pairing: Obviously, Colby/David
Word Count: ~1300
Rating: PG for language
Summary: Oh, so much fluff.
( Colby's head thunks against the window again )
And then I also wrote another Colby/David, for the
n3teamchallenge Team Cold. This one is even fluffier, and much sillier:
Cold-Blooded
I've also been trying to clean up and organize my tags lately, so that I have an easier time navigating my journal when I need to look things up.
Hope you're all enjoying the weekend, flist. The weather is just gorgeous here!

Birthday fic!
Jul. 2nd, 2011 12:39 amHappy Birthday,
mustangcandi!!!! I hope you have an absolutely fantabulous day. I am so, so glad that I started watching Numb3rs, and that I found the fandom, because it led me to meeting YOU. And that is awesome.
So, I come bearing fic, and I hope you enjoy it! (And I also hope that you're able to take a breather today and ONLY do the things you want to do.) Unfortunately, I don't have an icon for this pairing, so you'll have to make due with Colby's neck.
Fandom: Numb3rs
Title: Present Imperfect
Pairing: David/Liz
Rating: PG13
Word Count: ~900
Summary: It's David's birthday, and Liz has made a bit of a mess of things.
A/N: Written for

* OMG. You guys. Tomorrow is July 1. June, where did you go? Eep.
* So I brought Alice's Tea Cup (the book, no the actual place) home from the library yesterday and I'm pretty sure I can live off of nothing but scones and cake for the rest of my life. The first recipe I'm going to try is Lavender Earl Grey scones. Mmmm, scones.
* Speaking of baking, when it started to get a little stale, I managed to save the very delicious Spiced Lemon cake I made earlier in the week by soaking it in egg/coconut milk custard and then baking it into bread pudding. OMG, so good.
* Also? Fresh figs. OMG, yum. <3 summer. There's a reason I've never managed to make a recipe that calls for figs. I eat them all before I have the chance.
* I've been rearranging and I shifted the dining room around so now it's an entirely different wall that needs art. But I like it better this way. Anyway, I'm scouring etsy trying to figure out exactly what I want.
* Took a few days off from writing to regroup and reorganize my thoughts. In the last week, I finished off three fics for different fests, and I felt like I needed some time to clear them out of my head space. I'm feeling pretty good about all of it now. Hopefully in the next few days I'll finish the ending of my
crowley_bigbang and be able to start on my
femgenficathon story. I also want to fill a few prompts at the Summer in Harlan commentfic meme and there's more than one catching my eye at the Let's Get Gay Married commentfic meme too.
* SO, what are you guys up to?

When I wrote the prompts, this one was the one I really, really, really wanted, but I didn't think anyone would pick it. But my mystery author did!!!!
Anyway, here's the link, because if you've watched White Collar at all, ever, you will LOVE this.
